Answer:
Basic 1 class is a good place to start, especially for beginner skaters. You're on the right track. You're not really interested in hockey or figure skating - you'll need to eventually find a pair of skates that are right for you. Yes using rental skates at the moment is absolutely fine but the sooner you get your own skates, the better (rentals tend to be beaten up with blunt blades and broken down in so many ways - you're skating won't be the same in each pair). The differance between hockey and figure skates are: Hockey skate blades are rounded on both ends, the blade is thinner than figure skate blades (I don't know much about hockey skates sorry :P) Figure skates have a slight heel, the blades have a rocker (for spinning) and have a toe pick at the front of the blade Most beginners tend to buy figure skates as their first pair of skates, mainly because they find it easier to balance with the blade being wider than hockey skates. If you are thinking of going with figures then the good brands would be: Jackson, Risport, Riedell, Graf, SP Teri, Edea etc. Just because you're skating in figure skates doesn't necessarily mean you have to be a figure skater, most of these brands do recreational figure skates as part of their collection. Most kids and teens in the basic skills class (ones who are learning to become figure skaters) tend to buy the skirts/dresses to wear to lessons and practise. As you're not heading down that path, I would suggest getting a good pair of sweatpants or leggings and wearing a t-shirt or long sleeved top and a hoodie with them...and remember GLOVES!! You could buy legwarmers and other accesories if you wanted to (just don't wear scarves or items that will hang and get in the way). Good luck and happy skating :) hope I helped

hey i'm a beginner too! anyway since i'm a girl I always wear leggings. but if you're a guy sweatpants should be fine and a sweater too. i started using the rental skates but since i'm getting into actual figure skating i'm getting my own. if you just want to learn how to ice skate then the rental skates should be fine for you.

hey dear, basic one is basically like the teen classes. basic one will include younger children in it, but teen classes have, well, teens your age, and they move faster. basic one consist of these skills: Sit on ice and stand up March forward across the ice Forward swizzles 6-8 in a row Backward wiggles 6-8 in a row Snowplow stop it was quite simple to pick up on, and you will soon be gliding all over the ice. what to wear. when you go ice skating, do not wear jeans, leggings, or tight fitting clothing. you will feel bound in them, and they really soak up moister if you fall. avoid those. get athletic pants, such as yoga pants, or ice skating practice pants. they allow you to move freely, and are not binding. wear layers. wear a sports bra, tank top, and then a light shirt (no cotton), and a light jacket. that way you can shed these layers if you need to. wear gloves, they keep you hands warm. never, ever, wear scarves, they get all up in your way, and can be dangerous. they can get wrapped up in your skates, and cause you to fall. don't wear hats either, they can fall off, and block your vision. keep your hair in a pony tail, or bun to keep it out of your face. rental skates are fine, if you are not interested in learning figure skating or hockey. make sure that they fit properly, and don't hurt your feet. you could invest in a good pair of recreational skates. not as expensive as hockey or figure skates, but still skate pretty well. just check out the sporting good starts and see what they have. also, check out your rink shop. they have bags, skates, gloves, blade guards. things of that nature. other advice: go out there and have fun! if you fall, get up, and laugh it off. everyone falls on their butts, and it is no big deal. that is just ice skating! hope i helped you out, and happy skating!
bend your knees!! DONT lean back... only forwards. wear gloves. they should provide rentals. figure skates are easier for beginners
