  • Answer:

Relax! Everyone starts by marching, which is what you're doing. (In Australia, it's actually an element on the Basic 1 Aussie Skate test!). Don't panic. Just breathe, relax, and take you time. Why not take a few lessons? It'll help you work through the stroking.

Do you mean you're taking steps by putting one foot ahead while your weight remains on the back foot? If so, that is a common error and it is incorrect. Marching is done by turning your toes out slightly (like a duck) and stepping from foot to foot without placing either foot ahead of the other - they stay parallel while marching. If you are trying to walk, switch first to marching and focus on getting your weight on one foot at a time. Glide on both feet between marching steps. Graduate to putting your head/chest/knee/weight over the foot that's going to be traveling ahead and using the rear foot just to give yourself a slight push.
