What can i do to prepare myself for figure skating?

What to do to prepare for an Axel (figure skating)?

  • I've been skating for a little over 4 years and I've seriously got a problem with the Axel Jump. I can do every part of it except the back spin position. What should I ...show more

  • Answer:

I have been skating for a little over 4 years, and I have clean and beautiful axels, double sows, double toes, double loops, and ALMOST VERY VERY ALMOST double flips. The key to every jump is OFF ICE. Practice your jumps, or jump stand, and do quarter, quarter, quarter, quarter, half, half, full, full and a half, full and a half, double. go on if you can do more. DO NOT stop between jumps! just do them continuously. IT HELPS. Also stretch before and after to avoid injury!

Practise, practise, practise. I have just got mine and you really just have to do axel after axel. Try doing a backspin, jump, and continue landing in a backspin. You should be able to get a 11/2 revolutions in the air after a while and this really to get your revolutions in the air. Try practising really big 3 jumps and practise off-ice a lot. Really concentrate on bending your knee and jumping as high as possible. One thing that really helped me get mine was actually working on my double salcow/loop which is kind of backwards but it worked for me. talk to your coach and ask her/him to show you how to practise it off ice and just work at it. You will get it eventually and then you'll wonder why it ever caused you so much difficulty.

right when you take off swing your free foot through a little then snap your hips and you'll go right into you backspin position. it may take a few tries try doing this off ice or try having your coach hold you on an on-ice harness. also try a waltz jump landing in a backspin on-ice. then spinning around a few times.

on the ice, try to do a waltz jump, loop, then a long back spin, sequentially. after you master that, try to do a waltz jump and a loop jump at the same time in the air. that'll get you to do your axel

okay, i too have skated for 4 years and have learn the axel. i had the same problem. i couldn't get into the backspin part as easily as ppl told me it was. my coach made me do the practice jumps over and over again, testing my height and the quality of the back spin. try doin that alot on the ice. it feels so weird but it helps. hope that helps. good luck~

practice alot off ice!!! it helps with muscle memory once you get on the ice. Do like a million walk through on the ice as well, such as waltz jump loops, and waltz jumps into a backspin, and backspins alone too. If you have a harness at your rink, those help the most, so ask your coach to take you on the harness. I had the same problem as you with your axel where I wasn't crossing my feet, so this will help. Good luck, and I hope I helped.

you can practice backspins it helps and you can do scratch spins combo with backspin it will wrap you around in a postion you should be in. also you should practice your axel off ice on the floor but make sure your foot is up high and wraped around your free leg or you wont make the 3rd revalution and when you get to land try not to think aboutthe landing once you feel your feet tuching the ice or floor you will kno when to check out

he he i had the same problem 1.Its so important Jump OFF the pick watch competitive skaters in slo mo,they get height and perorationn by jumping of the pick(strengthen your calves to make this easier) 2.BEND watch mao asadas axel, shes almost on the floor on the takeoff 3.The Snap you need to kick out then snap into a back spin position 4.Arms Kim yu na has a brilliant arm movement forward on the LBO,back ,then forward with the legs tbh if you cant do a backspin you wont be able to do one in the air Hope this helps

off ice off ice off ice!! that helped me soooo much. also for ON ICE, practice waltz jump back spin, and waltz jump loop, and back spin hopping out. and then trying do a waltz jump loop jump and keep hopping around making sure to stay straight, and tight, VERY tight!! that's really important. use your core strength and keep your arms in tight. keep your leg crossed in the correct position. also on the ice if you have kind of a box where you open then door and there's like 6'' of step try standing facing it and kick up and cross your feet. do that to get the feel of kicking your right knee up and getting into the air position. also practice a back spin on a spinner if you have one. also just do normal off ice to build up your strength. ALSO: don't be scared, just do it, when you fall (and you will fall) it won't hurt, and if you're scared to fall just get a butt pad. plus it's repetition. and if your rink has an on ice harness ( a lot do now) definitely do them in that. i had my axel on the harness way before i had it off the harness. but it was great practice in getting the feel of how it is. just do it! go for it! and once you land it 3 times you've got it. you might mess up some after that, but once you land it 3 times you have it.

I just started landing mine, so hope this helps anyway. Practice the axel off-ice. If you're watching TV, during the commercials, do them off-ice. Just do them off-ice. It helps A LOT! But always make sure you're doing them right. Jump up, kicking your right knee up. Then you have to jump off your toe kinda and snap around. You have to think about pulling in to the backspin position. Once you've rotated, check out to stop the rotation so you're not out of control, but don't check out too early. Wait until you're coming down-that was one of my main problems. On ice, try really big waltz jumps, then waltz-loops, and walts-backspin. Also, a half axel, where you rotate once and land forward. Also, if you have a coach, it's really helpful to go on your rink's harness if you have one with him/her.
