How To Wax Skis?

I don't know how to wax or sharpen my skis?

    It's been my experience that few novice racers know how to wax and tune. You spend more time practicing and working out, so don't worry about not being able to do your own work yet. I think if your coach wants you to learn how to wax and tune you would be learning how to do that. I have to ask, is this a serious race team or just HS club skiing? When I raced in HS we did our own work because we didn't have a support team to wax and tune. The HS teams in Vermont I've worked with all have paid ski-techs that do the work for the kids. If you have to do your own stuff, the waxing equipment is relatively cheap, the vices and files and other tools for edging can be rather expensive. You might be better off paying a shop to do the edges. Get a part-time job with the ski shop if you really want to learn how to tune and wax.

Try a Dogpile search on ski tuning and also on ski waxing. In general, I never remove the old wax, just scrape it thin and melt another coat into the base. Downhill race skis do not get fast until they have been waxed dozens of times and used in races at competition speeds. I wax my teaching skis every 3-4 days of use and sharpen the edges about the same. The Tognar web page had an excellent explanation on how to tune a pair of skis. Go to Goodwill or St. Vinnies and get an old pair of skis to practice on and get an electric iron to melt the wax. Have fun and good luck.
