How To Share Mouse?

What's the easiest way to share keyboards / mouse / display between two macs?

  • I currently own a 2012 MacBookAir (with thunderbolt) and a 2010 MacBookPro (without thunderbolt) and I connect to a single display. I would like to eventually phase out the MacBookPro because ridiculously the MacBookAir is faster than the MacBookPro (a bit wtf). I won the bluetooth Magic Mouse, the bluetooth trackpad and the bluetooth keyboard, and I use them all to control the MacBookPro. But since processing is so much faster using the MacBookAir I am doing a lot of video rendering on the MacBookAir these days. What I would like to know is if there is an easy way to toggle the same keyboard / mouse / display easily between the two? For the display I don't mind manually switching the connectors (or find a displayport toggler) but for the bluetooth peripherals right now it seems very annoying since I have to continuously disconnect + disable one and reconnect to another. I would hate to have to buy another set of mouse / keyboard just to easily toggle between the two. Not to mention the clutter it would add to my desk. Any help and suggestions would be highly appreciated. Thanks very much for your help in advance!

    You don't need any extra hardware, there are free software packages available that allow you to share the mouse and keyboard between multiple computers (including Mac, PC, etc.) Check out: http://synergy-foss.org
