If you use any of the major engines, like Wordpress, you can configure your blog to Ping a list of services. Rather than having 20-30 urls to ping, most people just ping Pingomatic, or similar. By doing so, every time you post a new item in your blog, all the major services are updated. There's no need to submit to the search engines when you use Pingomatic... they'll get feeds from most of these services as well, and will notice your new content, and crawl it.
