In short, with extreme care. It really depends on your business model, how many email addresses you will be sending to, etc.. it's worth your time to hire a consultant in this area. Few things to ponder: A.) Make SURE they have an "opt out" link. The email address should have something like this as one of its headers: List-Unsubscribe: <>http://www.example.com/[email protected]> Also, make sure the email message itself has instructions about how to unsubscribe / opt-out. B.) Make sure and send plain text (not everyone uses HTML..) C.) Be diligent on who you send the email to. This is sort of complicated, you really want to specialize the email and ONLY send it to people who are actually interested. You can do this in a variety of ways, for example, sending the email to people you know have looked at a particular product page. (for example, is this product of interest to people who have purchased related products?) D.) Offer some value Bear in mind, most people don't really like getting "junk email" (and to the vast number of people who receive it, your email will be seen as "spam") so you should at least offer a newsletter or something of value to them. The whole art to this is only sending email to interested parties and doing everything you can to avoid emailing people who wouldn't appreciate it.
