Answer:
Some taxes are taken directly off the paycheck, but they should not be over 1/2 the amount. Maybe your employer is paying you for one week at a time. This payment is for the first week; you work 8 hours, made $68 and $1.43 was taken for taxes. You will get paid for the other 8 hours later. There is one problem with this theory. A lot more than $1.43 should have been taken for taxes.

First of all, see if the pay stub says what the pay period is, and look at the gross earnings. The first check likely doesn't include the most recent week. If that doesn't answer your question, come back here and show each line on your pay stub. Do you get tips on your job? If yes, tax would be taken out on your paycheck for the tips also.

4.2% of your $136 will be withheld for SS, 1.45% for Medicare, these are mandated taxes and nothing you can do to avoid them your state might have some kind of employee tax of possibly 1%, more or less as a minor and not anticipating earning up to $5950 for 2012, you can file your W-4 as exempt and no income taxes will be withheld something is drastically wrong if you only got $66.57 after earning $136, you should demand a pay stub and find out what they are withholding, other than the taxes mentioned here, there is nothing else they are legally able to withhold without your written permission

W-4 Employee's Withholding Allowance Certificate http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/fw4.pdf?p%E2%80%A6 Very simple and easy fill in the W-4 correctly and completely and just claim Single and -0- ZERO Allowances and then sign the completed W-4 form and give it to you employer at that time for the purpose of your federal income tax withholding amounts if any would be required to be withheld depending on the amount of your GROSS income for each pay period at that time. And then if they should withhold any amount of $$ out for the FIT amount as an estimated advance payment of any possible income tax liability that you might have when you correctly complete your 1040 income tax return during the 2013 income tax filing season and you receive your W-2 form from your employer around the middle of January 2013 and if you have a $$ amount in the Box 2 for FIT you will get a credit for that $$ amount on your 1040 income tax return and might qualify to get some are all of the withheld amount back as a REFUND amount when you correctly complete your 1040 income tax return print a copy for your records and sign the copy to send to the correct IRS address for processing during the 2013 tax fining season. My GUESSTIMATE now it is your turn or else you really should get the correct information about the above 66.57 DD amount from your employer and it might be possible that that was 1 week of wages earnings that you might have received for your first pay period guess a guess about this matter and problem that you do seem to have at this time. Using Ca for your state income tax amount at this time. Gross pay $136.00 Federal income tax $5.33 Social Security $5.71 Medicare $1.97 California $0.00 Net pay (take home) $122.99 1 week for the below GUESSTIMATE Gross pay $68.00 Federal income tax $2.67 Social Security $2.86 Medicare $0.99 California $0.00 Net pay (take home) $61.48 Hope that you find the above enclosed information useful. 07/07/2012

You should file exempt if you make less than 5950 for the year then no federal or state taxes will come out. You need to look at your stub and see what was taken out. That is high so there is something else there or hr did it wrong.
