    Andy's answer is mostly correct although if you come to Canada to study on a student visa you would be required to return home after your studies. You would not be able to, "...apply to change your status...". Sorry but retail is not considered an area that is in demand here in Canada. Companies will not hire foreigners to work at a job for which there is a qualified Canadian and I very strongly suspect it's the same in the U.S.

I gather you're between 18 and 30 and going on a working holiday? Just Google jobs and the city you want to be in...jobs Toronto, Vancouver, etc. From what I hear from mates over there their economy is worse off than ours and the retail sector is worse off than most however, that is not to say you won't find anything. Happy hunting! One warning for when you get over there...be prepared for really bad coffee! :P
