For a person without a computer science or STEM background looking to pivot from an unrelated prior profession into a career in tech product management, what are the best programming languages or skills to learn?
-
While the skills and needs can vary significantly between different product positions, is there any particular language or skillset someone without a CS/STEM background can learn to make themselves more competitive across the widest range of product job opportunities?

Answer:
See my post http://appliedframeworks.com/blog/2013/12/11/career-should-you-learn-to-program for thoughts on learning programming. You need to understand buyers and their problems more than you need to understand how to create products. Product management is about WHAT markets to serve and WHAT problems to solve, not about HOW to build products.

Many Product Managers grow into their job, and come from diverse backgrounds as well. Product Managers sometimes are referred to as Mini CEO's, and what makes you effetive are a good combination of leadership, market insight, customer knowledge and professional experience. If possible, network yourself into a start up environment and work with people in a capacity where you get a ring side view of the activities, approach and decisions which go in to launching a product for a target market. A few of those kind of experiences, and assuming you have some natural abilities of your own which are needed for this position will set you off in the right direction. Learning programming languages with the goal of becoming a product manager is not the way to approach it. Best of Luck.
