Where To Get Online Data Mining Work?

How can I get a job in finance as a big data / machine learning professional?

  • I currently work in big data / machine learning in a field that no longer excites me (consumer internet). I'd really love to make the leap to finance, but I'm in my late 20s and worried that I won't be able to get my foot in the door. Going back to school for an MBA isn't really an option as I already have a master's degree (in econometrics). I am very good with statistics and can program very adequately in Python and C++, and I'm very good with database architecture (both RDBS and NoSQL) and data mining techniques. I know "big data" systems and machine learning algorithms very well (Hadoop), too. What kind of a job title / position could I potentially transition into in Finance, preferably in London? What kind of companies could I expect to work for?

    You seem like you have all the qualifications everyone told me I oughta have when I was looking into quant/algorithmic/data mining finance jobs. I can't imagine you having any trouble. If you're really worried and talking to acquaintances in finance about expectations isn't enough, consider going through a headhunter. If you want to absolutely optimize starting title/salary, however, I'm not sure what the best advice is. Just know that you shouldn't have a problem.

I think you'd be looking for "Quant Analyst" roles. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantitative_analyst Your best bet would likely be with quantitative hedge funds if you're aiming for more front office work (trading desk) or algorithmic trading.  Other investment management firms (long/short) may also be interested in your skills from a micro/macro stock filtering perspective.  Risk management is an up and coming area which may have a lot of application for your skills. Another area to look at would be insurance/reinsurance and insurance linked hedge funds, there's a decent need for big data in risk modelling.
