Neonatologists are medical doctors. The first thing you'll have to do is complete a 4-year bachelor's degree at a college or university while taking the premedical courses. You do not have to major in a science, though many aspiring doctors do. In other words, you can't study neonatology on the undergraduate (bachelor's) level. Virtually all colleges and universities offer both sports and the premedical curriculum. When you are about to complete your bachelor's, you will take the MCAT exam and apply to medical school. If you get in, you will spend 4 years in med school, earn your MD degree, and THEN you will apply for hospital residencies in neonatology. A residency will take at least three years. So, you are talking about at least 11 years after high school before you can become a full-fledged neonatologist.
