I am going to disagree with you there, right away. In nurseries, even with the 0-3 year olds, everything is learn through play. At 2 years old, they are able to recognise letters in their own names. At 1 year, they start to recognise themselves in pictures and in mirrors. At 3 years old, they start to learn to write letters and can read short words such as "and". At 4, they are able to read certain words, write their own name, draw proper pictures. These are things taught to them by nursery teachers. At 2, they can begin to understand that if you mix yellow and blue together, you get green. They begin to understand full, empty, heavy, light and opposites.
