Hmm, Have I totally missed the plot here ??? Did you say your preschool daughters show and tell competition ?? As I see it, it isn't up to you to organise something wonderfully brilliant for her to discuss. So you can win the competition and feel like a GOOD mummy. For goodness sake, let her choose what she wants to talk about. Shes 5 years old, it will be cute, natural and most of all HER work.... Do not fall into the trap of trying to make her the best at everything. Love her for who she is, Accept her for how she was made.... Let her be herself, she will do fine !!!

Don't worry about what she should show. Worry about why a preschool would make something like this competitive. Show and tell ought to be informal and voluntary when a child has something, or has done something, that they'd like their friends to know about. No child should be forced to participate and it certainly shouldn't be a competition. If this is how they treat 5 year olds I'd look for another school.

Show and tell competition for a 5 year old!! They have to be kidding

My five year old is into "places" right now. He loves maps, globes and so on. Consider taking in a small globe or map of the U.S. and have her tell about a special place. For example, we live in MI but Grammy and Grandpa lived in CA. Learning about CA...where it was on the map was something he was very proud of. One time we took in a photo collage. People he loved. Then he told a little about each photo and what was going on in it. Competition? Wow... that's sad. Share 'n' Tell should be used as language builder instead of a competition. Yikes...especially at 5 years old!

Comp-as in competition?????-Pre-school??? 5 years old??? As a teacher AND a parent i would go on strike or move to a more humanist type school.......if you are not inclined to do this how about preparing her to show 'n' tell for world peace or human rights as current global issues..........

A competition? For show and tell? I wonder if we're talking about the same thing here. As I know it, show and tell is when a child takes an object to school. They show it to their class and tell about it, then the children can ask questions about it. Dd's classes did that in K and gr. 1. I'm not sure how a "globally current topic" could be used for show and tell. Could you add an update above with more information?

I did not think they still did show and tell ,but let her practice telling you about things she saw in a box ,as long as she can explain what she is or has seen ,she will be fine

Ask her what she would like to talk about, she is 5yrs old, and probably wouldnt care if she didnt win, as long as she enjoyed talking about her subject... When my son did his very first show and tell, he took his dad in... Now that's originality...

Do something she really likes to talk about. Kids are most cute and engaging when they are being natural. Perhaps have her tell the story of your grandparents and how they lived - pull out some old things that belong to your parents and explain them to her. Dress her up in clothes that they would have worn in their day. If she likes animals, you could have her talk about caring for animals properly and people's responsibility for the environment. Or if she likes frivolous things, go with that. Just so long as she has something to hold up and explain, and then something to compare or contrast it to. Practice with her, and applaud her efforts. Don't get too hung up on perfection. It's a popularity contest, not an academic one.
