What is it like to live in Switzerland?

If you live in Switzerland what languages do you have to know?

  • I just saw on google that the languages spoken in Switzerland are German, Italian, Romansh, and French. Do all of the Swiss people speak all of these languages? Like if you go to a ...show more

  • Answer:

Don't bother with Romansh it's barely spoken anymore, it's split up in each part of the country, and you'll come across only different dialect in almost every different canton, French is simple french italian is simple Italian but these parts of the country where there are italians; and the french are small, The most spoken language in Switzerland is Swiss german, The Swiss German "dialect" itself has more than half-a-dozen dialects, with those even having "sub"-dialects, variing from one region to another. It can be argued that, despite not officially recoginzed as such, Swiss German pratically is a separate language.

It depends where do you want to go. There is the italian part, the german part and the french part (Romansh isn't use almost nowhere). So if you want to work in the italian part you need to know Italian, in the french part the french and in the german part the german. But you need to know that almost everyone is able to undersand at least 2 languages, like german + french, french+italian, german + italian.. so i think if you want to move there you just need to know the language of your canton (little state). Then if you want to find a work where you need to speak with people is better to know at least another language !

It depends what part of the country. German is the most common, though. Italian and Romansch aremostly in the southern cantons, and French in some of the western ones. But you should be able to get by with just German.
