What are some great restaurants in madrid?

English in Madrid Restaurants?

  • Can one survive for around a week with just English in Madrid? Absolutely no Spanish! Just wondering, especially in Restaurants and Tourist Attractions. THanks

  • Answer:

Buy a Berlitz Spanish phrase book. It will explain all the menu items and has some good tips on local custom and practice. Almost everyone in the catering trade in central Madrid can speak some English and most places can find the English translation of the menu. I am surprised that that urban myth about a Latin American Spanish speaker not being able to understand Castillano popping up again. Ok some food items (e.g. tortilla) are different things, but really!

The Madrilenos pride themselves on speaking very little English. I lived there for a year and was very glad to have a dictionary with me because even tho I speak Spanish, Castillian Spanish is different from Central american Spanish. As far as tourist attractions goes, take the red bus tour the first day you arrive. You can listen in English as you get to see the entire city, it will make more sense to you and you can narrow down the things you want to see. You don't say when you plan on going...if you will be there in late March on through summer, don't miss going to a bullfight. The metro stops right by the arena.
