What are the German ICE trains?

Why don't ICE trains go full speed in Netherlands as they do in Germany?

  • I wonder what are reasons why high speed trains don't go full speed in NL. Could be tracks aren't ready or timetable is too tight to have window for high speed train? would be interesting if someone knows exact reason

  • Answer:

They are using the regular network which has its speed limits (because of topography and signalling systems). If they were using the HSL Zuid, they could go at line speed there. It has not much to do with the way NS operates.

For the same reason that the Thalys has limited speed in the Netherlands: Environmental issues, meaning noise pollution The Dutch rail system, managed by ProRail*, has not the 'straightness quality' that a high speed train requires. For example, in Japan, the trains that target local commuting run on a track that does not need to be as straight and perfectly aligned as the tracks for the Super Shinkansen. The same applies here. * If they can't manage to keep normal trains running during normal days, the odds that a high speed train will be able to run as intended is not very high. So in that regard, it may also be the best solution for now.
