MacBeth was meant to be king - this was decreed by the three wyrd sitsters, or fates. It was also meant that his friend Banquo's son be king. The tragedy of MacBeth is that he accepts the first part of the prophecy, even to the point of killing Duncan, but rebels against the second half of the prophecy and tries to get around it by murdering Banquo and trying to murder Fleance. In the end, he does take a heroic turn. Faced again by fate, in the form of McDuff, the one person who, by prophecy, can kill him, instead of fleeing he accepts fate. "Lay on McDuff" is the final heroic turn of this complex character.
