Would foster care be an option?

Whats it like going into foster care?

  • Im 14 and my mom is gonna give up her rights as a parent. I dont have relatives to live with. So i guess foster care is my only option. So whats foster care like? How many kids ...show more

  • Answer:

Some kids in foster care are treated well and they live in one home until they are ready to move out on their own. These are a very small minority. Some kids in foster care bounce around from one home to another and never stay in one place long enough to feel at home. Some kids in foster care are physically and/or sexually abused. Some kids in foster care are robbed of all their personal possessions by the very people who are supposed to be caring for them. I think you'd be better off trying to mend things at home.

I imagine it would be very scary but it may be better for you than your current situation. Forster care is regulated and you will probably be assigned a case worker that you can discuss any issues that arise in your new home. Being 14 you are at an age where you can speak up for yourself so that is a bonus at least. My aunt and uncle have 2 bio kids and 3 foster kids that they legally adopted and those kids (my cousins) were babies, all from very abusive beginnings. Your experience will depend on the family you are placed with. It will be an adjustment for both you and the family too so allow yourself some time to get used to each other. I hope you are placed in a supportive home that allows you to complete your education and that foster care is as positive an experience as it can be - good luck x

1, What is the matter with your Mother to give away her child? That is not the correct term 'giving up her rights as a parent' It is called abandoning you child and leaving it/them to the direction of the state. How any Mother can do this to her child is beyond me. I hope you are lucky in finding someone who will love you and treat you as their own, but in most cases Foster care, at least here in Australia is just ****! I am sorry, but that is the best way I can describe it here in Australia.
