Where can I learn online about how to make a small film?

How can I find a job on a film crew?

  • I've always wanted to be a filmmaker, but I've never quite figured out where to begin. I know everyone always says, "find a camera and start shooting," and I've done that, but there's only so much you can learn/make/do by yourself. I recently graduated from college and am ready to start seriously looking for a job on a film production crew, but I'm not sure where to look. Ideally, I'd like to work on a feature film or documentary (I'm open to television, too). I understand that I'll have to be a PA for awhile, and I'm okay with that. I just want to get on set and learn everything I can about filmmaking. I currently live in the Midwest and there aren't a lot of opportunities here, but I can't afford to move without securing a paying job first. Where should I look? What can I do to make my application more appealing to hiring managers? Thanks in advance for your help.

Do student films. Join filmmaking forums, Facebook groups and local competitions (48 hour festivals etc). Ask if you can crew for free. Turn up, do an earnest job, and stay in touch with everyone you meet. The first short I made was for a 48 hour festival using a free crew I organised through the Shooting People mailing list. My most recent gig was as an (unpaid) BTS photographer, which I got by asking on Phillip Bloom's forum.  When my next script is ready, all those contacts will be there for me.  Filmmaking seems to be one of those industries where an unpaid internship to build contacts and a reputation is the norm. Remember that the clapper loader on that no budget short may be the line producer on a feature in a few years.
