  • I will be taking a few fishing trips off the eastern coast of Florida, near Vero Beach and Fort Pierce. I haven't fished in quite a while, and I am curious; what kind of rod and ...show more

  • Answer:

If you are going out in the ocean rather than inshore/bay fishing, you will need some heavy rods with level wind bait casting reels. These can be used to troll lures or ballyhoo or to free line some large bait fish like a pin fish. You can also rig these up with some 6 to 10 ounce weights and bottom fish for grouper, snapper and amberjack. Live bait is best like pin fish or large menhaden, but frozen squid, or cigar minnows will work too. For bay fishing for reds, snook or trout, you can use a medium duty spinning reel with 8 to 15 pound line. Just make sure to use some shock leader of 30lbs on the last 2-3 feet. This type of rod and reel would work well on rivers. Inshore fish love live pin fish, green backs, pogies and shrimp. you can use lures like yo zuri, zara spooks, spoons etc as well.
