Does reel weight matter or no for surf and pier fishing?

Should i get a spinning reel or a casting reel for surf/pier fishing?

  • what would be the disadvantages or advantages for using one or the other. I know what they both are and how they are used, im just not sure which would be better for surf/pier fishing

  • Answer:

Not at all knocking a couple of great answers but I would go with the spinning reel for pier fishing and surf also if you have not bought the casting reel. Why- Doing lots of pier fishing I have found the function of using the spinning reel handier plus the way hold the rod during the fight on a pier is great. Example- Leaning over the pier while trying to control say a cobia from cutting off on pilings.Using your forearm or chest as leverage while keeping both hands in control of the rod and pressure.Look at most piers the height is mid stomach or chest level! I am not saying it is better by far but can have a few benefits when used. Casting- The new spinners with stronger drags, large spool capacity matched to a rod will cast very far and will allow you the power to play even large fish.I have several series 90's reels and a few 10's to even the beast 16000 reel that boast a drag of 30 plus lbs and this is good enough for most any fish the surf or pier will bring you. Also the ease of casting but in my case I love my casting reels but I am finding the spinner to hold its place right next to them whether I am surf or pier fishing.

This Q depends on a couple other Q's- How much do you want to spend? On average, you can get an exceptional Pier/Surf Fishing Spinning reel for the amount of money you would pay for an OK Casting reel. Example- - Penn 650SSM- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_72135_151001002_151000000_151001000_151-1-2 - Abu Classic Inshore- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_103564_151001001_151000000_151001000_151-1-1 Can you cast a B-Casting outfit moderately well? Can you easily compensate for windy conditions? Are you willing (and able) to adjust your Casting reel every time you want to change weights? Bottom line- How "dedicated" are you to learning how to cast correctly??? And will you be that dedicated every time you want to go fishing, (it only takes one good "birds-nest" and your done!). Are you going to use Braid? I've had excellent results Surf fishing with 8/40 Power Pro line, (on a Spinning reel). With 8lb diameter line you can easily cast 1-4 OZ lead to "the Moon"!!! All you need is a 20-25LB Fluorocarbon leader........ The major drawback to using a Spinning outfit for any fishing is the drag power. But there are a few Spinners that have the "horse-power" to muscle fish like a Caster. Here's a few- - Fin Nor OFS- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_89192____SearchResults -Shimano Spheros- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_103536_151001002_151000000_151001000?cmCat=CROSSSELL_THUMBNAIL (The above Spheros has more drag power than many conventional reels!!!!!! It is also well-built and has a low price tag!!!) Bottom-line????? Which do you prefer? Maybe go to your local Pier and count how many Spinning outfits there are vs B-casting outfits........? Hope this helps? TU's to GMB.

Swamp Zombie

the reel does not mean anything in terms of casting distance. it depends on the person casting. a spinning reel is good for lures up to about 5ozs. past that it puts alot of pressure on the reel during casting. over 5oz i would use a conventional reel. they can handle much heavier baits with ease

AdamS

spinning it casts further but isnt as strong so if your just jigging or letting it sit waiting for sharks or something then a baqitcasting is better becuase they are stronger and hold more line for long runs
