  If the tool that you are using to recrown the muzzle is not sharp, it can cause chatter. If you feed rate is too high, you can get chatter and if teh barrel is not properly secured in the lathe, you can get chatter. There are some alloys that are more prone to chatter than others but you are not likely to encounter these in regular gunsmithing. The way you prevent chatter form any of these causes is to avoid the cause in the first place. Once you have had some chatter, immediately stop and solve the problem or you could end up havint to recut the muzzle to get rid of the chatter if it gets too deep.
