Answer:
You need to know a couple things, First you need the ballistic info for your round. That includes bullet weight, and BC, along with ACTUAL muzzle velocity. Best guess is fine at close range, at long range best guess gives you a big miss. 300 yards isn't that far, but it's far enough. Once that's done you just need a drop chart, or an online calculator. ONe of my fav's, do a google search for 'NORMA BALLISTIC". It will let you plug in all kinds of info and show what your estimated drop or rise is at any yardage. Once that's done you'll know where you should be hitting at 50. HOWEVER, once you get out to a real range you'll need to actually fire at that range. Charts and calcs work around nominal numbers, your gun WILL be different. You will be in the ballpark though.

Thumbs up to stupid... The way (and the only way) to zero at 300 is to shoot at 300. Even with a chronograph, any extrapolation is still just guessing. I'd suggest you keep your zero to 200, though normally I'd suggest figuring out MPBR and zeroing to that number. The reason is that you're carrying an AR-10, which is going to handicap you in terms of long-range hunting, and you probably shouldn't attempt a shot past that range, or at most 250 yards. If you had a hunting rifle, it might be different.

Your talk of 300 yards tells me you have a scope mounted. For a dead on at 200 yards setting, you would hit about an inch low at 50 yards. All the other answers at the time I begin typing overlook the fact the scope is higher than the barrel. Regards, Larry.

I say 200yd zero. At 100yd a 308 should still be on target close enough for a kill and at 300yds as well. The information is there.....-4.7 at 200yds and -16.4 at 300yds with 100yd zero. That sounds wrong to me in the guns that I shoot. The best way to be sure is to try in your gun. Colorado is gun friendly and I can't believe there is no place in the country to shoot....cause i have been there and there is plenty of desert and open areas.

check for an outdoor range that has at least a 100 yard range . but if there is not one just remember before you fire aim an inch high for every fifty yards

here is a little trick Jack O'Connor used, he would sight his dead on at 25 yards,(3 1/2 high at 100 yards, 4 inches high at 200 yards) it then would put you close to dead on at 300 yards(with most cartridges doing over 3000 fps), I have a range that goes from 25 yards to 300 yards, and yes his trick works but since you do not have a long range course, there would be no way to check this out, but from my experience it does work, I once sighted in my 243 Winchester Model 70 dead on at 26 yards, and since I read a lot about ballistics and bullet drop, I knew that this would put me dead on with 100 grain factory loads, and at 400 yards it would be 9 inches low, the next day I shot a cow elk at what I guesstimated to be 400 yards, my friend said he would back me up with his 7mm Magnum her had a Leopold 6.5x 20 x 50 adj-obj, believe it or not I just had a Tasco 4 power scope, one shot dropped the elk, I held what I thought was 7 inches high, the bullet hit her in the neck and dropped her in her tracks. plus this is a good way to check if your rifle is still sighted. good luck

.308 USING 150 GR.BULLET +.50 AT 50YDS. +1.5AT 100YDS. 0 AT 200 YDS. -3.5 AT 250YDS. -7.0 AT 300YDS. -21 AT 400 YDS. -39 AT 500 YDS. Using a pre 64 model 70 Winchester. federal blue box 150 gr. ammo my mod.70 is a carbine, (short barrel) so there will be some difference depending on your barrel length. After testing my weapon at these ranges that's what I came up with. I hope this will help you with your rifle. I have found that using a gun vice and actually shooting at 200 yds. gives much better results.

So, basically all of you who took the time to post here, and none of you actually know how to do it? Why did you post an answer to a question that you don't know anything about? So typical. Anyhow, if you really want to know, here's a video of Travis Haley explaining how to do it for various ranges, up to 300, what the differences are and why you might want each one. https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=2Nzv8unkmJo

According to the ballistics chart provided for the cartridge you will be shooting, to hit dead on at 300 yards you should be 8.3" high at 50 yards. That bullet has a big drop down range.
If you desire to sight in any rifle at 300 yards and you only have a 50 yard range you would simply look at the ballistic table for the type of ammo your shooting (I.E. federal .308 168 GR Boat Tail) You would then go to federalpremium.com and look at where the 50 yard trajectory is when the zero is set to 300 yards. If it says that the 50 yard trajectory is 4 inches high on a 300 yard zero, then if you sight in 4 inches high at 50 yards your zeroed at 300 as well. FYI: At these distances a bolt action is preferred. Happy shooting!
