What is Entry Level Direct Sales?

What is the best way to "sell" myself to land an entry-level sales position?

  • I'm really interested in getting into a sales position. What attracts me to sales is that its ultimately the driving force in company growth and revenue, and I think personally developing "pitch" skill set will be useful throughout life. I'm 24, really eager to learn, have done my share of post-grad travel cavorting and ready to dig in and earn some money. Whats the best approach, tactic, level of enthusiasm to show? Hopefully Sales experts can give their thoughts.

  • Answer:

    1. Start hustling. 2. Develop a thick skin. 3. Stop pitching. Demonstrate value then listen. 4. Sales is about helping people buy. 5. Inbound is different than outbound. 6. Number of clients/transaction size affects the role. 7.  Develop the ability to follow up. Nobody buys when you want them to. 7. Attention to detail is key. 8. Choose what you wish to sell wisely. Love your product/service. 9. Try and set yourself up for success. 10. Get lucky.

You sound ready to learn and to tackle the challenges. That's great! There are a couple ways to get started. 1) Approach companies you're interested in working for. You don';t need a fully-developed or informed interest -- just some interest. Contact HR AND sales managers and ask for informational interviews. In those interviews, ask questions to find out what kinds of sales jobs they have, what kind of training they offer, what kinds of qualities would earn you that entry-level job. Use that information to then pursue sales jobs that interest you. Note: Informational interviews often open doors to real job interviews but you should approach them in exploring mode, not as a side-door to jobs. 2) Start applying for sales positions. This means you need to have your resume ready, and be ready to talk about why you're interested, what you bring to the table, etc. You can get help with this preparation a number of ways, including at your local EDD if you're in a US city. As you get interviews, give it your best shot. Ask much the same questions as you would in informational interviews but flip the emphasis over: These interviews are more about your aptitude. Look for sales positions that provide training. One more note: It's the interview and application processes themselves that will ready you to get that entry level job. Now go get 'em!

First, stop “selling” yourself. You don’t need to pitch anyone interviewing you on why they should hire you. It sounds like you are not worried about landing interviews, but mostly are concerned with actually succeeding at the interview. You broke it down into three areas, so I will mirror that: Approach- You have a story to tell and that is way more authentic than selling yourself based on abstract skills and feelings you may have about your unproven abilities (assuming entry-level with no quota performance history). why did you travel until you were 24? What did you learn? What were some unique experiences you had? If you can tell a good story, you can sell. Tactics- Listen. Listening is the most important skill in sales. If you interrupt or do not answer a question in a way that makes sense given the context of the question, you will not get an offer. Enthusiasm- Research the company. Ask great questions based on your research. Telling a hiring manager how excited you are falls flat without well thought out questions. If you can nail those three areas you are in a great position to get hired. Lastly, remember that you are interviewing them too. Don’t be afraid to find out that the company isn’t right for you. Taking a job you end up hating months down the line can be prevented through great interview skills.Good luck out there.
