What can I do on the last day of Kindergarten?

What’s the average day like for a kindergarten teacher?

  • I'm thinking of changing my major to early childhood education. I was just wonder what a hour by hour day is like. I love work to with kids at church and think I would like teaching.

  • Answer:

That is awesome - I am looking to major in teaching, but am still undecided in which age level. My son is a kindergartner and I actually went and sat in his class yesterday - it is nuts - that is for sure. His teacher is very sweet, still relatively young, and very cool. But there was no way of keeping everybody together/quiet/focused for more than probably 10 minutes. Teaching these young ones you have to be very active, and it requires a huge amount of patience. Do you have any young kids or nieces/nephews in this grade level? If so, how about signing up with the school to be a volunteer in the class? Or how about afterschool programs at the elementary school to see what they're like? Hope this helps - good luck!

Why don't you call your local school and ask if you can volunteer your time or just observe a classroom for a day. While public schools may be a bit leary of a stranger coming in, private schools may be a better bet. Right now I teach k4, or pre kindergarten, so it isn't exactly what you are asking for but I'll tell you my day. 8:00 morning routine, take attendance, lunch count, check folders, start first bathroom break. get children started on quiet table activity or seat work 8:30 small morning snack, clean up 8:45 pledges, morning songs, calendar, weather, jobs, exercises 9:00 devotions/circle time/story 9:45 seat work, small groups 10:15 bathroom break, centers 10:45 sensory activity 11:05 recess 11:30 lunch 12:00 books/puzzles/manipulatives 12:30 large group activity - example: alphabet bingo, drama, etc 1:00 nap 3:00 afternoon snack, room clean up 3:20 music and movement 3:45 afternoon recess just an idea of how busy our day is! busy but very rewarding if you love it. You might want to research your area. Call colleges and ask how many early childhood teachers graduate each year. Then call schools and ask how many new hires they employ for early childhood each year. There are tons of people who are certified to teach early childhood and elementary education that don't have a job because everybody wants to teach the little ones therefore the job market is saturated with teachers for the third grade on down to preschool. To answer your question a kindergarten teacher answers more questions in the first 15 minutes of class and ties more shoes and wipes more noses before lunch than all the teachers in the rest of the school combined. Add that to giving hugs for boo-boo's
