How many compression rings in marine engines normally have?

How can I reduce the blue/grey smoke emissions from my Volvo Penta Marine Diesel Engines TMD41's ?

  • These engines run very well, plenty of compression/oil pressure, they are notorious apparently for being ' a bit smokey' and it does fade when the engines are warm. Are oil ...show more

  • Answer:

Try additive "No Smoke" Use only one can. If you use a bunch, it will smoke a bunch. One can and you can drive a car down the highway without any visible signs from the exhaust. . Your engine needs work, possibly leaking from the heads intake valve...as you are burning oil.

Never put additives in fuel. If they worked they would be in there already. What you could try is using fully synthetic lubricating oil at the next oil change. This stuff is more resistant to burning than mineral oil. Use a 5w-40 diesel grade and it should improve. The engines will last longer too.

Leave it alone, best advice. Almost all old marine diesel engines will smoke a bit on start up. Dont load it until it goes away. Some recommend heavier oil - I would not. That engine could outlast the boat. I have a 1974 perkins 4108 in mine - in that time, the only thing (apart from oil changes and filters) has been tappet adjustment (made no real difference), injectors serviced (not replaced), and fuel pump. - in almost 40 years! Probably a little inefficient, certainly noisy, but runs. An engine you trust on a boat is more important than a wee bit of smoke. Regards Fin

Air / fuel mixture needs a proper adjustment.
