How often are merchant seamen away from home?

Is being an merchant seamen a hard or easy job?

  • what are the advantages and disadvantages of an merchant seamen

  • Answer:

I spent several years working at sea, and i enjoyed it, worst thing though, was its very difficult to keep any sort of stable relationship going at home, when you are at sea. The other thing is that you cant chose the people you meet every day, and you cant avoid them, and some of them, find the job so stressfull, that they are in a bad mood 24/7, then their are people that you will have absolutely nothing in common with, and today, you dont get to see much of the world, as a merchant ship can often discharge cargo, and load in a few hours, only time you get to go ashore, is often when the ship has to go in for repairs for a few days.

Other answers

Since there is no where to spend your money while at sea and port times on most ships are so short now you'll come home with a bundle of cash. I work 4 months a year at sea and take the rest of the time off with sometimes a part time job at a ski hill or any place chicks hang out. The job is usually pretty much the same every day, so after you know it, it's easy. I've never been on a ship I didn't like, it's just the people you have to deal with that can drive you nuts. Some feel they should have a higher ranking position, some think they should get paid more, some just don't like to work, some like to make your life miserable for no reason at all.
