What is a good starter street bike for a female beginner just learning to ride?

I am a 19 year old girl, and only 5'4"...so i don't want anything too big for me. This will be my first bike, and I am just learning to ride! :) Thanks!

First I recommend taking an MSF motorcycle safety course. They will teach you the basic of riding and most important safe riding. As for a bike I would say start on something small like a 250cc to start. Once you have the skills and feel comfortable you can more on to something larger. The biggest mistake I see with any rider (male or female) is purchasing a large bike that they cant handle.

Take a course first. Start on something in the 250cc to 400cc range. Honda rebel or shadows are good bikes. so are the 250 ninja. You can even go with a Honda reflex scooter, it is also 250cc interstate legal, light at 350 lbs and an automatic. Whatever you do decide make sure it fits you. Also spend time getting the feel of the controls before you go for a ride.

I like the Yamaha V-Star bikes for any beginning rider. The small versions are 650cc and they have a low seat height and relatively light weight. The problem with a 250cc bike is that you will probably not be satisfied with such a small bike for very long. Definitely start with a beginner class. Abate offers a great class that isn't very expensive depending on where you live. Good luck!

The above comments pretty much covered it. Just reiterating, TAKING A MSF COURSE is a very good idea

A nice cruiser is going to be a Honda Rebel...or if you are looking for a sport bike look, get a Ninja 250 or 500. Now I am not saying you have to start small because you are a woman, but you are 5'4 and I am thinking of your ability to get your feet on the ground. I think you may even be able to do a Shadow 750 if you want to go bigger, but I think you should go to a Honda shop and sit on them, make sure you can get your feet completely onto the ground. I have no doubt you can do a Rebel, and its a very light bike so I don't think you will drop it very easy. Good luck!!!!

Maybe a Honda 250 Nighthawk. Maybe a Kawasaki EX 500. Maybe a Suzuki GS 550. Maybe a Honda Hawk GT. Something two cylinders or less. Good luck!

I would start with a hybrid bike that can handle biking on the road as well as light off-road riding. I would also suggest getting a men's bike. They tend to be a bit sturdier because of the bar. Depending on how much you have to spend, you may want to consider going to a bike shop. it will be more expensive then a retailer but the quality of bike is much better and they can fit you for your bike.
