Answer:
The D90 is a great camera. I've recommended it to a few people, and they have all really liked it. The new D5100 looks pretty good too, but if it doesn't have the CLS built into it, the D90 will serve you better in the long run.

$1000 sounds pretty steep (I'm assuming you are talking U.S. dollars). Any entry level dSLR in the $600 range is good for beginners (you don't really outgrow a new camera within a year). Spend the extra money on a good lens instead. Although you will eventually outgrow the camera, you normally don't outgrow a good lens.

Every answer was either 'my camera's best' or 'D3000!' The Nikon D3000 is the worst DSLR on the market, and I say that as a Nikon shooter. There's a reason you can buy the kits used for $200. Wait until next month. Preorder the D3100 kit for $700. It's pretty much poised to be the best entry level camera you can get, at an amazing startup price.

Go to a shop and also handle a 50d. Thing is with DSLR, everyone seems to think their cam is best. In reality there are no bad cameras, there's just differences that make the one better for you than the other. Go handle a d90 and a 50d and see which one feels best, buy that one.

I own a Nikon D3000, & love it. It is really easy to use. I have used a Canon 10D, 20D, 30D, 50D and Rebel in a class. I recommend the rebel, it is new & easy to use. Nikon & Canon..all are great.

I have a Canon Rebel and it's fabulous. It's great for beginners, it was really good to learn on and expand. I highly recommend it! It's not the BEST you can get but it's perfect for learning with. And just another tip if you really want to get into photography, take pictures of everything! There is no such thing as a bad subject! Take a picture of the blind on the window at a wierd angle and you may be surpised at how good of a shot it can be. Don't be afraid to experiment either. Try different light, use your friends and have them model for me, try your eye of portraiture. Try every angle, every light, every subject, and DO NOT be afraid to try new things! Have fun, too. Just have a blast. Try fun poses with your friends, be goofy too. Hope this helps!
