  • Answer:

France overall is not as hot as Spain, but it can get pretty cold, especially in Paris and to the North. The better weather can probably be found along the coast, such as the south and southwest, where winters are not as cold (though it still can get chilly) and the summers are helped by the ocean climate, and by the Alps where summers are cooler. Normandy/Brittany OTOH are often cold and rainy. It looks like you are coming from the UK so I think you have the right to work in France, right? Not having French speaking ability is a huge minus in finding a job, but if you are a native English speaker, you could pretty easily get a job as an English teacher. I have a friend who started working at Berlitz with zero English teaching background and while she hated it, it was a launching pad to less miserable and better paid English teaching positions at other schools. Right now the economy seems to be terrible everywhere so maybe even these jobs are difficult to find, but I think with diligence, you could eventually find something. How tough it is to live in France depends on how much money you have! France is not cheap in general, but you can find a much lower cost of living by avoiding Paris! Just by moving to any other major city, you can probably find housing at half (or less) the cost of Paris, and food and everything else will also be cheaper. And by being flexible enough to move to a small city or town, you can probably make do with even less, although life may not be as convenient. I think the British sterling has gotten crapped on in recent years, but maybe not so much vis-a-vis the euro? Until you find a job, life in France will be VERY tough. If you are young, your best shot may be to come over with enough savings to stay in a hostel and while you're there, ask around with no hesitation, no shame, about available jobs, as well as inquiring at all the English language institutes. Might as well start brushing up on your resume. In any case, bonne chance!

If you've been somewhere 7 years you ought to have made contacts and learnt the language. Go somewhere else and surely you'll be starting from scratch. Not trying to scare you of course, but I know a young woman, a modern languages graduate, who can't get teaching work ANYWHERE so she's having to do what she promised she'd never, ever (ever) do and go into secondary teaching.
