  Montmarte!..also called the 18th. Stay inside the Gare Du Nord and go to the La Chapelle stop (line 2) and go in the Porte Dauphine direction (west) and get off at the Anvers, Pigalle, Blanche or Clinchy metro and go uphill towards the Sacre Coeur. The entire area is dotted with tiny bistros, standing room only and many have live music at night. Walking further north and behind the Sacre Coeur, you get into the African district. People say that it is risky, but you shouldn't have a problem is groups of 2 or more. Draft beers start at about 4 euros. You can hang out in front of the Sacre Coeur and listen to the street musicians and dance if you like and buy a beer from the kids who walk around with 12 packs of Heinekin (the cops don't mind, as long as you keep it cool). For a nice club/bistro/bar, just look for the bodies spilling into the street and squeeze your way in. I stayed off the Anvers stop at the Hotel Avenir for 60 euros/night (single).
