What are your ideas about promoting a new product?

Which product ideas would you submit to Quirky and which to Edison Nation?

  • Both Edison Nation and Quirky help inventors with product ideas.  Quirky seems to use a user voting system, while Edison Nation uses their staff to evaluate products.  There must be some method to selecting what product ideas should go one place vs. the other.  Any ideas?

  • Answer:

I think the difference between the two really depends on your intellectual property strategy. My impression of Quirky is that they do better for more design related products where intellectual property protection is not a big issue. However, if I want to patent the idea before presenting it, Edison Nation has relationships with the large companies in the niche areas relevant to particular products and these companies are very interested in patents. If you have a random idea which doesn't appeal to particular niche that is being focused on with Edison Nation or if your product has design features that are difficult to patent, Quirky might be better. However, for me I would consider Edison Nation more appealing as they have a stronger focus on intellectual property protection and working with more established distribution chains and so it looks like there is good potential for more money if it is specific for a niche area that they are specialising in at the time.
