Do some ornamental fish live 200 years?

How many years does your betta fish stand (live) in your tank?

  • How many years does your betta fish stand (live) in your tank? It's life span , is 3-5years. but, i would like to know all your practical experiences!

  • Answer:

I've had several bettas over the years. My first only lived three years (but he was in a bowl and I was about six), I had two live six years and my last lived eight. I now have a male and a female that I have just gotten and am looking forward to keeping in good health. I am getting a third tonight and may eventually breed the fish. their worth the little effort it takes to keep them and can even survive in a 'plastic tub' (I have a five gallon one for one of my males so he doesn't see the other). They can live up to ten years and I have a friend who had one for almost eleven years. Their hardy little guys.

Actually their lifespan can go up to 10 years with the proper care. I have personally kept a betta fish for eight years, and two for six years. If you shove them into bowls, then yes, their lifespan can be as limited as 2-3 years, but in a proper heated and filtered tank, those little guys can survive up to 10 years.

I've had all my betta for 4-6 years, except my newest girl I got last week. The "life span" you reference is an average and is lower than the actual life expectancy because most people just kill their betta within a year or two so it brings the average down. My oldest betta I had for 12 years from when I was a kid to when I left for college, RIP Ahab. He is my first fish love adn got me hooked on fish.

Their average lifespan is actually 5-6 years, although many people report having ones that lived much longer. Mine usually average about 6 years, although two were given to me, and I have no idea how old they were. I had them for 4 and 5 years after I got them. I hope to figure out the "secret" to an exceptionally long life for Bettas.

I was 8 or 9 when I got my first betta. He lived about 3.5 - 4 years and he was in a tiny tank (because I was little and didn't know better) and I always forgot to feed him. My red betta, Torch, lived for almost 2 years but developed a fungal infection, despite my valiant efforts to save him (he was my favorite fish). Then there was Izzy, who I had to use for a science project. She lived 2 years. I don't remember how she died. Then Chloe was 3 years old and I think she went of old age. Now I have Peeta, I rescued him from someone how left him to die in a small bowl of water in the 100 degree heat. He's sitting on my desk right now. I have no idea how old he is, but I've had him for almost a month now. He looks full grown.

It depends on how you keep them. If you put them in a liter fish bowl then their life will be limited to a couple years, but if you put it in a 20 gallon aquarium they could live up to 8+ years. I have kept betta fish for quite a while now maybe 10+ years and they do quite well in 20 gallons. If you are trying to breed them PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THEY ARE CALLED "CHINESE FIGHTING FISH" AND WILL TRY TO KILL EACH OTHER SO DON"T PUT THEM TOGETHER! If you want to try breeding get a cheap pair that aren't as attractive as most and put them in two separate aquariums next to each other so that the male will see the female and if he is "attracted" to her he will create what is know as a bubble nest that holds the eggs and then the female will get fat with eggs. Then you can put them together and test it out. Good luck! :)

I keep my bettas in large community aquarium (167 gallons) with ph 6, temperature 26 degrees, a variety of store bought and live foods and they live for 3 years at max. However, if you keep them in those tiny bowls, feed them only one kind or food and keep them in other bad conditions, then it will liver for 1 year if it is lucky. If you do all the thing I did and keep them at a lower temperature, then it is possible for the betta to live for 5 or more years.
