How do you keep a sand substrate moist for hermit crabs?

    I have always had hermit crabs but never put them in sand. I always used the gravel that you put on the bottom of a fish tank. Try using that next time you clean their tank. That might make it harder for them to dig down there. Thanks for the thumbs down. If I may edit my response....as long as you leave a little area of sand that is fine. Also, change up their surroundings at least once a month so they do not get bored. Good luck.

Yes, it's very normal. DO NOT replace your substrate with gravel! Hermit crabs need to dig down and molt. What you're doing is best for their health. A 5-gallon tank is too small for hermit crabs, even only two small ones. Switch to a ten-gallon or larger. Also, check out the hermit crab care links.
