    I did it several times when lived in France. The best time was in early spring - not too crowded (a weekend in late June was the worst - too many people), nice warm weather. I hope you have the transportation taken care of - if I remember correctly there is not train service there and buses in off-season have some irregular schedule (a friend of mine took a train to Rouen, got stranded there and had to get back to Paris). If you have time - visit also Saint Malo and small villages on the cost - they are quite pretty! Well, I am biased, I admit.

I visited 3 years ago at the end of September. It was a wonderful, sunny day and we cycled from the campsite. The first time you see the structures on the mont is amazing! What I liked: a. the view, the sheep grazing in the fields surrounding the mont b. the interior, and having enough space to wander around as much as we wanted. c. the information provided - very detailed, wonderful history d. going out on the flats afterwards and walking to the little island/rock What needs improving are the facilities around Mont St. Michel - the infrastructure on the strip leading up to the Mont is charmless and the restaurant we ate at on the island had adopted the 'wham bam thank you mam' philosophy wholeheartedly. The approach to tourism around Mont Saint Michel needs some mayor rethinking: there doesn't seem to be any reason to linger after you've seen the isle.
