  • Answer:

Hook the digital audio output of the PS3 to the digital audio input of your surround sound system. This will get you surround sound for your PS3. For cable, do you have a cable box? If so, connect the digital audio output of the cable box to the digital audio input of your surround sound system. If the cable goes directly into your tv, then use the digital audio output from your tv to your surround sound system. You do need to know that only surround sound enabled content will play that way and that anything that is stereo will play in stereo no matter how you have things hooked up. Having said that, some surround sound systems have a "pseudo" surround sound mode which fakes surround sound from a stereo signal. If your unit has that capability you can try that and see if you like it or not. As an addendum, if you do not have digital audio inputs or outputs but only red and white RCA connections for audio it is still possible to get Dolby Pro Logic II analog surround sound IF your surround sound system supports it. However, again I stress that you will only get surround sound if the source (cable tv or ps3) is outputting surround sound.

if your tv is hd which i suppose it is because you're using an hdmi cable, it should probably have a port that looks something like this, http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://akamaipix.crutchfield.com/lifestyle/2001/hToslinkJack.jpeg&imgrefurl=http://community.crutchfield.com/forums/p/3105/13176.aspx&usg=__JcwjMj74s54N7UaFv_NjO9i9cDg=&h=319&w=331&sz=21&hl=en&start=0&zoom=1&tbnid=y58uaxnUxbA4kM:&tbnh=144&tbnw=128&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dtoslink%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26biw%3D1280%26bih%3D909%26tbs%3Disch:1&um=1&itbs=1&iact=rc&dur=31&ei=17cKTffuLYeisQPNkuyQCg&oei=17cKTffuLYeisQPNkuyQCg&esq=1&page=1&ndsp=24&ved=1t:429,r:6,s:0&tx=89&ty=84 this is a toslink output, or digital audio, there should be another port just like that on your reciever, use this cable: http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.smarthome.com/images/851031side.jpg&imgrefurl=http://forums.qj.net/general-gaming-discussion/35229-post-your-gaming-setups-4.html&usg=__oUzhZMqrCm8YBSSaG7R7lA1rowI=&h=476&w=600&sz=55&hl=en&start=0&zoom=1&tbnid=pYq2FCqrAXI5RM:&tbnh=161&tbnw=219&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dtoslink%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26biw%3D1280%26bih%3D909%26tbs%3Disch:1&um=1&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=987&vpy=230&dur=249&hovh=200&hovw=252&tx=234&ty=160&ei=17cKTffuLYeisQPNkuyQCg&oei=17cKTffuLYeisQPNkuyQCg&esq=1&page=1&ndsp=24&ved=1t:429,r:5,s:0 to connect it, find which setting your reciever uses to output the toslink audio, (mines is on SAT) and the anything as long as it's plugged into your tv should be in surround sound if you have your reciever set to it.
