Hi there. Some models of surround sound amplifier do have HDMI switching, which means that you plug your PS3 etc. into the amplifier, then the amplifier into the TV. To swap between devices, you use your amplifier. Ask the people on the linked forum for more help Other than that, use the optical out on your PS3 and other sources, to go to your amplifier, and just use HDMI straight to the TV for picture. NB Using HDMI for sound will allow for better quality sound (with the correct amplifier, you can get uncompressed audio from your PS3)

you are not required to, but you would have to if you would like surround sound from either source, unless your tv would have some sort of digital audio output, then just verify that the output still works(on some tvs, the digital audio out is only used for the internal hd antenna reciever, and is turned off for other sources)
