Best way to social network?

What is the best way to build, maintain, and properly enjoy having a big social network?

• I mean, we all see people on Facebook with 1,000-5,000 friends and everything and acquaintances of all kinds, but I'm asking it's not networking for the sake of networking, but instead, using said social network in order to make on's life easier or better. I mean, I think someone has ever found a good friend or a romantic partner from having a big social network, right? (Right?)

  Unless you're a celebrity and want to promote your work / image, you are better of having a smaller (much smaller) network.  That's because of the 1000-1500 people you "friend" on FB, how many have you actually spoken to on phone.  Even once. How many have you actually seen?  How many have you actually had 1-on-1 coffee with?  I love it when people / companies tell me they have 1000 friends or 1000000 likes.  Think of your ability to network (give-take / learn-share) as a rectangle with fixed area.  The more friends you have (length), the shallower your relationship is (height).  Which would you rather be?
