you can shut down using the power on Button too. Pushendu Chouhan explained it nicely. Normally the older PC were not configured the power on button for safe shut down (soft shut down). they were used for hard shutdowns only. most newer PC's (windows based ) are configured for safe shut down. (not sure on other OS like linux, mac etc.) if you have voice recognition program installed in your PC, even your word "Shutdown" is enough to shutdown the PC. No need of mouse/keyboard/puch button.

You can configure the ON button to do various things when you press it while the computer is running, one of those options is to shut down the computer. In standard configuration you will usually find holding the power button in for a few seconds will force a shut-down but this is really only for when the PC becomes totally unresponsive and you want to turn it off and leave home !!! In Vista and Win7 ... just type "change what the power button ..." in the search box after clicking on the "Orb" and select Change what the power buttons do ... and follow the prompts.

You can shut down your computer by simply holding the "power" button in for about 5 to 7 seconds. You can shut down your computer by using keyboard commands. This second method differs depending on the OS that you are running. XP: Windows Key/Up Arrow/Enter/Right Arrow/Enter. Vista: Windows Key/Right Arrow 3 times/Enter Win7: Windows Key/Right Arrow/Enter. These commands will initiate a standard Windows shut down. Windows does not shut down like a light bulb because while shutting down, Windows checks the system to make sure that there is nothing that needs to be written to the Registry, and or if there are programs open that need to be closed before shutting down the OS. It also give Windows a chance to "warn" you to close any open programs correctly so that you do not loose any work or data that has not been saved.
