Is a smart phone really worth it for a high schooler?

Are high end smart phones worth it?

  • Do high end smart phones offer features that are really worth the money or will a mid range smartphone do the job adequately? I'm only talking about productivity benefits (battery life, faster internet etc). Looks and image are least of my priorities. Build quality is important but within reason. I will use the phone at most for 2 years before moving on.

  • Answer:

They are worth every penny since they age accordingly!

Actually, the high end smartphones are worth only only to flaunt or to make high profile friends with high ego who otherwise don't let people "whom they perceive as poor" to even come near them. Else, it is better to buy mid-ranged phones. These high end phones don't have considerable advantages over mid-ranged ones. Also, most mid-ranged phones have dual sim options whereas the high end ones are almost exclusively single sim as most of them target USA where people buy phones with contracts with network carriers. For example, consider 2 phones- 1)Sony Xperia M dual C2004- Cost INR 10.2k (about 170$) 2)Samsung Galaxy S5 - Cost 36k (about 600$) The difference are (Xperia M dual vs Galaxy S5, "RESPECTIVELY") -only uncommon feature are listed. 4" vs 5" screen 1GB vs 2GB RAM 4GB vs 16GB internal memory,  supports 128GB vs 32GB microSD support water proof/ non-water proof 1.9Ghz quadcore vs 1Ghz dual core TFT vs AMOLED screen Display resolution, sharpness: 480x854(245 ppi) vs 1080x1920(432 ppi) Camera: 5MP vs 16MP, 0.3MP front vs 2MP front Video resolution: 1280 x 720p @ 30fps vs 3840 x 2160p @ 30fps, 1920 x 1080p @ 60fps (2 video modes for s5) FM vs noFM (yeah s5 has no FM) Build: I am not interested in builds and aesthetics, but only in functioning. All I know is that S5 has stronger screen. I don't have s5, only M dual which has decent build. I have read that s5 too has good if not better build Extra sensors for s5: Fingerprint ID, Gyroscope, Heart Rate Monitor, Humidity Sensor, IR Gesture, Barometer Now S5 certainly has better specs in all aspects except dual sim, but are the upgrades worth it? Do we need 5" screen for a phone? Won't it be too big? Do we need 2GB RAM? My PC had has 4GB. Why does a phone need 2GB? What are you going to use it for? Internal memory is not as useful when you have option for microSD.  Just don't install high end games as they require large memory.I believe that if you are capable of buying a smartphone worth 10k, you are surely capable of buying laptop worth 30k with graphics card. Why would you play high end games on that tiny screen? Also, 32GB microSD is more than enough. No need for 128GB (I've never seen anyone using even 64GB card) 1.6Ghz quad vs 1Ghz dual does appear a big difference, but human capability is limited to perceive those difference. Humans aren't super fast. As long as you are not playing GTA type games on Android, it shouldn't matter. Most of the time less than 5% of CPU is used. TFT and AMOLED has some difference, but it is not worth any extra bucks unless you are too finicky about microscopic details. Same with pixel density and resolution. Anything above 200ppi is OK for a phone. Aslo, whatever the resolution, video on a phone will never equal the experience of video on a pc/laptop Camera: This is the only area which is useful amongst all the differeces listed. And s5 is clear winner. Also, the s5 camera and videos are good enough to professionally record a video (awesome quality, just check youtube for sample videos). The extra sensors appear pretty much useless. Why would you need a barometer or humidity sensor in a normal life? Are you doing a research? Same with heart rate sensors, gesture sensors. Fingerprint sensors are somewhat useful. Conclusion: s5 is "perceivably" better than Xperia Min all category except dual sim and FM. Now let us calculate the difference in economic value for customers (normal, not some special category person like sportsman, trecker, professional cameraman) for upgrades in various features: Galaxy S5 compared to Xperia M dual positives and gain of economic value with each positive: 1)Camera and Video (4000 INR or 66.5$) 2)Internal memory (600INR or 10$) 3) Fingerprint sensor (300INR or 5$) 3)microSD support difference (100INR, 1.5$) 4)Processor (1500INR or 25$) 5)RAM (600INR or 10$) 6)Display sharpness and resolution(500INR-8.5$) 7)Extra sensors (300INR or 5$) 8)Build (600INR for slightly better drop-resistant screen) Galaxy S5 compared to Xperia M dual negatives and the loss of economic value associated with each negatives: 1)Dual Sim (-3000INR or -50$) 2)FM (-300INR or -5$) So, the approx economic value (utility to customer) of S5 over Xperi M dual is: 4000+600+300+100+1500+600+500+300+600 - 3000 -300 = 4200INR or 70$ But the cost difference is over 25k INR(about 420$). You may have different utility/economic value for various features. This is just my economic value for the features. The calculations of the value for various upgrades may seem unfair as despite double changes in sections like display, sharpness etc, the value addition is just a small fraction. This is because my calculation is based on the principle of diminishing marginal rate of substitution- as you get more of a product, its value to you decreases. For example, when you processor increases from 1Ghz to 1.6Ghz quad, you will not get much utility increase though you get twice the processing power increase (1.6Ghz*4*0.75-1Ghz*2*0.75 =4.8-1.5= 3.3Ghz  ___ 0.75 is a multiplication factor when converting multicores into single core as multicores are not 2 separate cores and hence not twice the processing power).

Depends. If you want to grab some attention in the crowd and want to show some swagger & style and have plenty of money to spend, then go ahead and buy top notch flagship phones. But you should never expect phone to perform miraculously and other mid range phones would appear like a piece of crap infront of this phone. Personally I feel that that they dont worth it.I would provide some reasons to support my answer. They cant offer anything special: Because mid range phone with even a quad core processor can handle all day to day multitasking like calls message internet and games. (High end games would not work properly but still they would be playable). They would not lag a bit provided we use them wisely. Today even phones with price of 8000rs comes with fingerprint sensor and with excellent build quality and 4000 maH battery. So why to spend our hard earned cash on something which we could get for half price? Price automatically  falls:Manufacturers like Samsung, Sony and HTC lower down the price of the phones to almost half of the phone's launched price to resist the competition from chinese brands.. So customers literally feel cheated about the money they are spending.I would explain it with example. Two years ago Samsung had announced a new flagship phone, Samsung Galaxy S4 for the whooping amount of 40,000rs. And today they are selling it  for just 17000rs. We can imagine how much profit these premium brands are earning on such phones.(I was one of the fool who bought this phone for 40000.) Most of the people dont use the same phone for more than 1 or 2 years as anyone would get bored using the same device. Now with high end phone you dont have such luxury to change the phone.( If a person is billionaire then he will change such expensive stuff in 6 months.) You can enjoy the experience of high end phone by using a mid range phone.(One cant much find much  difference in the performance of Samsung Galaxy S5 and Oneplus one). There are too many options today which are as good as high end phones at lower prices. eg Huawei honor 7, Oneplus 2, Oneplus X, ZTE Nubia,Xiaomi mi 4,LeEco le 1s and much more. Recently announced Xiaomi mi 5 is worth to buy. Checkout its hands on review. It can outclass and outperform any high end phone in terms of design and processor. So cut in short I would recommend to buy a decent mid range phone and spend the rest on internet or buy some smartwatch or accessories like powerbank or headphones to further enhance the performance.

The feature on the  high end smartphone are really worth it for instance just take the example of qualccum Snapdragon 810 which the chipset of most midrange device wheres snapdragon 820 which is twice faster is the chipset of most expensive flagship device and belive me it is really fast also there are camera apreature and stuff like screen panel which will be better if the price is better .
