How is commerce at UTM?

Which is better, Commerce kickstart or spree commerce?

  • Which is better to go ahead with for an e-commerce platform ? Ruby's spree platform http://spreecommerce.com/  or  Drupal's commerce kickstart -  http://commerceguys.com/product/commerce-kickstart ? Consider all aspects -  php vs ruby, latest trends, lightweight, speed, community support, scalability etc.

  • Answer:

I haven't tried out Spree but if  you are planning to decide between either of these it should also depend on your inhouse capabilities if you are doing this inhouse or access to a good vendor in these technologies if you are looking for a vendor. In terms of community support I would think Drupal would trump most other solutions. Capable manpower and support are probably going to be the more critical aspects that will decide which of these would suit your needs best.

Problem of choice between two different platforms is always confusing one, especially when you are wanted to create really good store. Both Kickstart and Spree commerce have their pros and cons, and I recommend you to have a look on more than two those platforms also. Lots of them are some of the best e-commerce builders in the eCommerce industry. It’s understandable that you don’t want to spend time building out a business with one of the worse platforms, then realizing that you may have to switch to another e-commerce builder. You have to make a right decision as well.  Speaking about Kickstart. For real don’t waste your time on it if you don’t have already good optimizes to store. What I mean, if you think, you're just going to place your Idea on there and think people are going to back you (that a big mistake), if you think, it is going to promote you (that a big mistake), so a way do you think you need to kickstart – you do not. Furthermore, lots of reviewers about it are really awful. Speaking about SpreeCommerce it’s open source shopping cart that enables you to build and maintain an online shop. Spree Commerce is a viable choice for individuals and businesses that are looking for a flexible, fast, and affordable eCommerce hosting solution. Built using Ruby on Rails, Spree Commerce is a bit technical and may require users to be least semi-fluent in the programming language or hire an experienced designer and developer to help in creating and deploying your site. If you want to do not get deep into all this programing stuff and want to save a money you can have a look on ShoppingCartElit. ShoppingCartElit is a complex eCommerce platform solution. Good feature that it offers is the automation of everything at your store. ShoppingCartElit offers a 30-Day free trial. Furthermore, it’s not so bad secure there. I think it’s important when you’re doing business also.  Disclosure: I wrote this post, and I reviewed this company in my answer.

is what I would use. Here's a list of pros: clean and simple responsive interface for users and store owners a great deal of open source extensions easy customization of design and business logic compared to other PHP e-commerce solutions like Kickstart or , primarily thanks to serving as the base of Spree well suited for small, medium and large inventories (it scales really well, we had a client with over 3 000 000 SKUs) mature and well tested hundreds of open source developers working on Spree compared to a handful of people developing other platforms great code quality (thanks to the previous point)

I have heard that spree commerce is a very good choice, and it is highly customizable. Moreover its based on Rails, so any modifications can be made super fast. I have experience in both ruby(Rails) and php, and i am a converted Rails enthusiast who took the jump from php and havent looked back since. Basically i dont voice support to any php frameworks except Laravel, its an awesome framework, reminds me of Rails. I have seen the google trends on php vs ruby, and i did note that ruby trend is increasing over the years, while php is declining sharply (this does not mean php will be dead, but this does mean people are beginning to give due respect to ruby ). Spreecommerce has many active contributors, which i was able to judge from their github page, and no such active contributions from Drupal's commerce. Spreecommerce is pretty scalable, but i have heard no issues as of now, probably because not many popular brands use it. Moreover, when it comes to scalability the database queries are the most important thing to be optimized as is 95% of the cases. It doesnt matter if you use ruby, php, java, or nodejs (A hello-world speed experiment in all these languages are available, just google it, but for the normal user, we wont notice any difference in the end, for ecommerce sites). You will never ever even reach the stage to change the ORMs in any framework if you know how to scale the databases, besides cloud is getting cheaper by the day, and it will get dirt dirt cheap in years to come, so you can throw more resources to the issue at hand if you are scale agnostic. Majority of top100 sites in the world run in php, but some large scale sites are running in ruby(rails) also. Some sites running Rails(that spreecommerce is built on) : groupon, Twitter (formerly used rails, but now using Scala to suit their purpose because "live" data doesnt scale in ruby or php or any other interpreted language, they needed a compiled language solution, but the fact that they have been using rails for so long time, that itself is praiseworthy of rails), Crunchbase, Shopify, Bloomberg, Indiegogo, Airbnb, Soundcloud, Heroku, Zendesk, Hulu, Github, Slideshare etc. (Quora, i think, is running on Python/Django). Basically you get the idea now that ruby is scalable. Spree commerce community is awesome, and they have got millions in funding from investors already. Sorry if i speak only for ruby here, but coming this from a php/ruby dev, i say i support ruby(rails) and spreecommerce is too good a solution. But its currently popular in North America only.
