What is the difference between a PAL and NTSC camcorder?

    PAL is the TV standard used in Europe for color analog television. NTSC televisions in the United States can't display it. That's the downside. A few models of TV sets, especially at the high end and especially in recent years, will accept both NTSC and PAL signals. If you will only play the video on your own set and it accepts PAL, a PAL camcorder might be okay. If you want something that can play back on any North American TV set, you need NTSC. If it's a digital camcorder, and you'll be viewing your video on a computer, the PAL and NTSC difference isn't as important, since you can work around it with video editors and converters and such.

You don't give the make and model of the camera, but Just for information. you are right about the different formats. Plus side, if you intend to edit them on your computer then there will be no difference, your computer will not care, its only data. and if you decide to put your video onto a DVD then you can tell your software to change the system to NTSC, ner DVD player will play either system, as the DVD will not be region coded anyway. Down side, if you need parts, its probable that you may not be able to get the parts in north America, and they will have to be imported from Europe, or directly from the makers. this could take time and probably more expence. many newer TV's will play either systems, without any problems. I live in Europe and have Both NTSC and PAL camcorders, I never have problems. they are tape based, Others may tell you different but that my own personal experience. RR
