How do I get HD videos off of my camera?

I just bought a new Canon HG10 HD video camera with hard drive. Can't get my videos into my computer.?

  • Windows MovieMaker nor Nero recognizes my camera as a device. How do I get my videos into my computer?

  • Answer:

That is a hard drive based camcorder. You do not "import" the video like with a firewire connected miniDV camcorder. As a USB device, it whould mount and you copy the video files like when you use other USB mass storage devices. In high-definition mode, it records using AVCHD compression. Neither MovieMaker nor Nero can do anything with those files. Even Sony Vegas can't do anything with Canon-AVCHD. Adobe Premier might be able to. Video quality for editing is not very good. AVCHD compresses too much. MiniDV tape recording in HDV provides best video quality.

You need to get the proper program for your computer, write to Canon and tell them your computer model and camera model and they should be able to help you.
