The quickest way to learn PHP is definitely through using it. Set yourself a basic task in PHP, and look up the syntax / how to do each stage. W3Schools (http://www.w3schools.com/) is an very good free resource - it's very complete. My first PHP program was a Creaser Cipher - look them up online, good first program to make because it is very simple, but teaches you the basics of string manipulation, and you can then build on it. Good luck with it, and have fun!
