How to Wire a telephone jack?

For a four pin telephone jack which posicion is each wire suppose to be?

  • For a four pin telephone jack which position is each wire suppose to be? HELP!!!

  • Answer:

The phones normally only use two wires. So the two inside ones are used for line 1 or a single line. The jacks are 4 pin and can handle 2 lines. The two outside wires are for line 2 of a two line system. Assuming a home system. Actual color from the incoming wiring can be different. It all depends on what wires were used in the first place. I had a house where the upstairs was wired different colors from the basement. So line 1 was red yellow up stairs and green black downstairs. So when adding in line 2 just used the other colors for up and down accordingly. For an actual color scheme there should be one but I haven't seen one that was consistant. Either they did it differently over time or the installers have been lazy. So I always go to the incoming wire block and see what colors were used inside and wire accordingly for all 4 pins. It only takes a few seconds to check it and then you know how your house was wired.
