Shooting with a simple, non-focusing lens using a very small sensor will be obvious when compared to the same subject shot with a professional quality camera system.

All three can be somewhat effective. But basically a phone camera is an adult toy, a video camera for movies, and a regular digital can range from a toy to thousands of dollars. If you want lot of fun, all three are good. If you want serious memories to last a lifetime, stick with a good digital. I could go on forever with specific recommendations based on the broadness of the question but everyone has there individual preferences. Just remember you get what you pay for. Higher mega pixel ratings is something to look for.

Yes, there are phone cameras that can do the functions of both, still and video camera.However, I am of the opinion that the digital camera and the video camera take a better quality photo than the phone camera.

You mean just doing those? Yes. The nokia I using can do that and save into a SD memory card. Even camera now can take digital photo and video for a short time. Phone camera just so that same thing too.
