How are the Eastern Christians celebrating Easter?

Were Christians really celebrating Easter so soon after the crucifixion and would Herod the King have known that?

  • Acts 12:1 KJV 1: Now about that time Herod the king stretched forth his hands to vex certain of the church. 4: And when he had apprehended him, he put him in prison, and delivered him ...show more

  • Answer:

The King Herod in Acts was Herod Agrippa 1, grandson of Herod trhe Great who was the Herod responsible for killing all the male children 2 years of age and under after Jesus was born. The events outlined in Acts chapter 12 took place in A.D. 43, the year before Herod Agrippa died. The crucifixion of Jesus had taken place at least ten years earlier. Finally, those first Christians were not celebrating Easter. Herod Agrippa siezed James, the brother of John, had put him to death with the sword. This pleased the Jews so he proceeded to seize Peter alos. This happened during the Feast of Unleavened Bread. It was Herod's intention to try him after the Passover. Nothing to do with Easter, and these events took place at least ten years after Jesus' resurrection. LM

1. Distinguish between Passover and Easter. If memory serves me correctly on the point; the term 'Easter' occurs only once and the original language refers to Passover. (Hint; I am a Christian; not a Jew (i the commonly used sense here presently)).

It was after Passover, not Easter - don't know why your KJV says Easter - Easter was not celebrated as it is today until centuries later. Passover was the biggest holiday then, and the remembrance of Jesus crucifixtion and resurrection was also celebrated each year, however it was not called Easter until centuries later. In all other versions - New International, etc it says Passover, not Easter in the passage. As one other answerer said the ancient greek translation for the word is actually Passover - only the KJV version calls it Easter.
