How do homeless shelters work?

How do homeless shelters work?

  • Do they constantly permit the same homeless individuals to reenter the shelter? Is there a limit on how often or how long a person can stay?

  • Answer:

It depends. The one I know about lets people stay there all winter long, although they have to leave in the morning and can't come back until 5:30 in the evening. They can come to the door from noon to one to see if they received any mail. It is run by the Salvation Army, with a lot of help from local churches. (Our church buys, cooks and serves dinner every second Monday; three other small churches do dinner on the 1st, 3rd and 4th Monday, another, bigger church buys, cooks and serves dinner every Tuesday, and so on.) It is open November 1 - April 30.
