    What should really happen is the parents in your area get together and tell your schools to shove community service up their "nose". School is for teaching. community service is a wonderful thing, but not something to force on high school students. Now to help you, if you like people try a retirement home or homeless shelter. The local veterans hospital could use some help. If you like animals try the ASPCA or animal shelter. Picking up trash along the road is great exercise and gets you out in the fresh air. Charities can use help. Volunteer for a political campaign might even count.

you can go to the soup kitchen in branford, its behind the police station. i did it a bunch of times and it fun and you can get a lot of good hours!

How about a local food bank? Where I live they have something called The Second Harvest Food Bank and are always on the look out for people to help pack food in boxes, etc. for those in need.

I'd use a volunteer search engine. This way you can find something that will be enjoyable and will really help someone in need. The website below has a list/description of a few well known search engines. I think 1-800-Volunteer is my favorite. There's so many different types of volunteering you could try. Some examples are being a disaster volunteer with the Red Cross, teaching someone to read, being a big brother/sister, sorting items at a food bank, giving tours at a museum, teaching computers to the elderly, working with the disabled, fundraising for a non-profit, doing web design or grant writing, etc.
